We were hired to design the branding and complete visual identity of a specialty, single-origin coffee shop in Bucharest, Romania. The mission was to capture a rustic and down-to-earth essence yet at the same time convey the premium quality of the blends. Our solution was a design that is both appealing to coffee newcomers, but also holds a special significance for those who are familiar with premium coffee.

OUR BRANDING PROCESS

STEP 1: Research

Before even picking up a pencil, the first step is listening, understanding and getting a feel for the brand. We need to translate a desire, a dream into something not just concrete, but also profitable.

We do some digging into the how’s and why’s of your company. If it’s an existing brand, we want to know what your current strategies are, what is or isn’t working, and what the current public perception of the company is. We combine this with research on the competition, target audience and current visual identity to create a brand profile.

This step requires interviews, data collection and visual analysis. We want to know what makes your company tick, and where it needs a little more TLC.

We ask everything and them some; it doesn’t matter if it means creating something from zero our reinventing something that’s been around the block a few too many times. Every detail matters.

STEP 2: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

After the research phase, we compare the answers and data with the desired market niche and target audience in order to find the sweet spot between client satisfaction and efficiency on the operational end.

In this step we explain our motives, ideas, concepts and everything else in order to keep you always up to date and in agreeance with the creation process. If you have questions or doubts, we are always happy to take a step back and walk through it again.

Many times our role at this stage is to advise you when your idea or plan isn’t likely to be functional in the real world, and suggest realistic alternatives, but the final word is always yours. Never underestimate the intuition of an enterpreneur!

STEP 3: INITIAL DESIGNS

There are a thousand ways to say the same thing, and knowing this, we develop a variety of initial designs (usually somewhere between 4-8) for refinement until we reach the final product.

This is the fun and creative part where we get to come up with bold visual respresentations of your idea. The sky’s the limit here!

We change colors, patterns, fonts, sizes, shapes, styles and much more to insure a variety of options for you to choose from. The most important part of this phase is reaching a concept that meets your expectations.

STEP 4: REFINEMENT

After choosing a concept comes the most important phase of the project, which is refinement. Just like a river, the idea flows, expanding, changing and evolving. The concept that at the beginning was raw and unpolished develops a form and nature of its own.

We begin developing the visual identity in parallel with the logo, so that your brand can be recognized consistently in all mediums and without needing to see the logo directly.

In this phase it’s important to do market research with the target audience so that the idea that you have in mind is being interpreted in the same way by your public.

After we refine the coal into a diamond it’s important not only to reap the fruits of our labor but to also teach you the process.

More important than giving a man a fish is teaching him to fish, and having a successful brand is a continuous and consistent process. For this we create a brand manual outlining the entire visual style, rules and imagery so that you won’t lose the ability to fish for, and hook, your clientele.

Here we will teach you to give life to your brand, make your idea develop a personality and express itself to the public. Just as an actor needs to live his role, the business person needs to learn to live his or her brand.
